How Backlogs Affect CGPA
In VTU, when you fail a subject (receive an F grade), that subject contributes 0 grade points to your CGPA calculation. The credits of the failed subject are still counted in the total credits denominator, but contribute nothing to the numerator. This significantly drags down your CGPA.
Example: If you have 120 total credits and failed a 4-credit subject, those 4 credits are in your denominator adding nothing to your points. Your CGPA is calculated as: Total Credit Points / 120 instead of Total Credit Points / 116.
When you clear the backlog by scoring a passing grade, those 4 credits now contribute actual grade points (e.g., grade B+ = 7 points → 28 credit points). This immediately improves your CGPA without changing any other subjects.
VTU Backlog Rules
Maximum Backlogs Allowed
VTU allows students to have backlogs, but there are limits. Under the newer schemes (2022, 2025), students must clear all backlogs within the maximum permitted duration. Typically, you can have pending backlogs while progressing to the next semester, but you must clear them before receiving your degree.
Year Back Rules
If a student fails to clear backlogs within the prescribed time, VTU may grant a "year back" — an additional year to complete the remaining subjects. This extends the total duration of the course. Students exceeding the maximum course duration (usually 8 years for regular, 10 years for lateral entry) may be de-registered.
Revaluation Process
If you believe your answer script was evaluated incorrectly, you can apply for revaluation within 15 days of result declaration. VTU charges a fee per subject for revaluation. If your grade changes, the revaluation fee is refunded. The revaluation result is considered final.
Backlog Exam Schedule
VTU conducts backlog examinations alongside regular semester exams. You can appear for backlog subjects in any subsequent exam cycle. There is no limit on the number of attempts, but each attempt must be within the maximum course duration. The latest grade obtained replaces all previous grades for that subject.
Tips for Clearing Backlogs
Prioritize High-Credit Subjects
Focus on clearing backlog subjects with higher credits first, as they have a bigger impact on your CGPA improvement.
Use Previous Year Papers
VTU repeats question patterns. Solve at least 5 years of previous question papers for each backlog subject to understand the exam pattern.
Apply for Revaluation if Unsure
If you scored borderline marks (35-39), apply for revaluation. Many students get upgraded to passing grades after revaluation.
Don't Accumulate Backlogs
Clear backlogs as early as possible. The more backlogs you accumulate, the harder it becomes to manage both current studies and backlog preparation.
Aim for Better Grades, Not Just Pass
Don't settle for just clearing with a P grade. Aim for B+ or higher — a better grade means more CGPA improvement and a stronger academic record.
