What is SGPA in VTU 2022 Scheme?
SGPA stands for Semester Grade Point Average. It is a numerical representation of a student's academic performance in a single semester at Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU). Under the 2022 scheme, each semester contains multiple subjects with assigned credits. Your SGPA is calculated by taking the weighted average of grade points earned across all subjects in that semester.
The VTU 2022 scheme follows a 10-point grading scale where grades range from O (Outstanding, 10 points) to F (Fail, 0 points). Each subject carries a specific credit value based on its importance and workload. To calculate SGPA, you multiply each subject's grade point by its credits, sum all the products, and then divide by the total credits for that semester.
The formula is: SGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credits) / Σ Credits. For example, if you score grade A (8 points) in a 4-credit subject, your credit points for that subject would be 8 × 4 = 32.
VTU 2022 Scheme Grading System
| Grade | Grade Points | Marks Range | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| O | 10 | 90 - 100 | Outstanding |
| A+ | 9 | 80 - 89 | Excellent |
| A | 8 | 70 - 79 | Very Good |
| B+ | 7 | 60 - 69 | Good |
| B | 6 | 55 - 59 | Above Average |
| C | 5 | 50 - 54 | Average |
| P | 4 | 40 - 49 | Pass |
| F | 0 | 0 - 39 | Fail |
How to Calculate SGPA for VTU 2022 Scheme
Step 1: Identify Your Subjects and Credits
Each semester under the VTU 2022 scheme has a fixed set of subjects with assigned credits. Typically, theory subjects carry 3-4 credits, while laboratory and practical subjects carry 1-2 credits. Check your semester's subject list to know the exact credits for each subject.
Step 2: Note Down Your Grades
After each semester's results are declared, you receive grades for every subject. These grades correspond to specific grade points on the VTU 10-point scale. For instance, an 'A+' grade gives you 9 grade points, while an 'O' grade gives you 10 grade points.
Step 3: Multiply Grade Points by Credits
For each subject, multiply its grade point by the assigned credit value. This gives you the credit points earned for that subject. For example, if you scored 'B+' (7 points) in a subject with 4 credits, your credit points for that subject would be 7 × 4 = 28.
Step 4: Sum Up and Divide
Add all the credit points together to get the total credit points. Then add all the credits to get the total credits. Divide the total credit points by the total credits to get your SGPA. The formula is: SGPA = Total Credit Points ÷ Total Credits.
Example Calculation
| Subject | Credits | Grade | Points | Credit Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Discrete Mathematics | 4 | A | 8 | 32 |
| Computer Organization | 4 | B+ | 7 | 28 |
| Digital Logic Design | 4 | O | 10 | 40 |
| OOP | 3 | A+ | 9 | 27 |
| DBMS | 3 | A | 8 | 24 |
| OOP Lab | 1 | O | 10 | 10 |
| DBMS Lab | 1 | A+ | 9 | 9 |
Total Credit Points = 32 + 28 + 40 + 27 + 24 + 10 + 9 = 170
Total Credits = 4 + 4 + 4 + 3 + 3 + 1 + 1 = 20
SGPA = 170 / 20 = 8.50
