VTU Target Planner
VTU Required SGPA Calculator
Calculate the minimum SGPA you need next semester to achieve your target CGPA
How This Calculator Works
This calculator uses the credit-weighted CGPA formula to reverse-engineer the SGPA you need in your upcoming semester. The formula is derived from the standard VTU CGPA calculation:
Formula
Required SGPA = (Target CGPA × Total Credits − Current Credit Points) / Next Semester Credits
Total Credits
Current Credits + Next Semester Credits
Current Credit Points
Current CGPA × Current Credits
For example, if your current CGPA is 7.0 with 120 credits completed, and you want to reach 8.0 CGPA after a 22-credit semester, you need: (8.0 × 142 − 7.0 × 120) / 22 = 9.45 SGPA.
Quick Reference Table
Common scenarios assuming 120 credits completed and a 22-credit next semester:
| Current CGPA | Target CGPA | → | Required SGPA | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6.0 | 7.0 | → | 8.45 | Achievable |
| 7.0 | 8.0 | → | 9.45 | Very Difficult |
| 7.5 | 8.0 | → | 8.86 | Achievable |
| 8.0 | 8.5 | → | 9.27 | Very Difficult |
| 6.0 | 8.0 | → | 10.91 | Not Possible |
| 7.0 | 7.5 | → | 7.95 | Achievable |
| 8.5 | 9.0 | → | 9.73 | Very Difficult |
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate the SGPA I need next semester?
Enter your current CGPA, total credits completed, target CGPA, and next semester's credits into the calculator above. It uses the formula: Required SGPA = (Target CGPA × Total Credits − Current Credit Points) / Next Semester Credits. The result tells you the exact SGPA you need to hit your goal.
What does "Not Possible" mean in the result?
If the required SGPA exceeds 10.0, it means your target CGPA is mathematically impossible to achieve in a single remaining semester. You would need to either lower your target, take more credits in future semesters, or improve your current CGPA first.
What is the difference between "Achievable" and "Very Difficult"?
"Achievable" (green) means the required SGPA is 9.0 or below, which is a realistic goal. "Very Difficult" (yellow) means the required SGPA is between 9.0 and 10.0 — possible but demanding near-perfect grades. "Not Possible" (red) means the target cannot be reached in one semester.
Does this work for all VTU schemes?
Yes, this calculator works for all VTU schemes (2025, 2022, 2021, and 2018). The CGPA formula is universal across all schemes — only the scheme selector is provided for consistency with other calculators on this site. The required SGPA calculation is scheme-independent.
Where do I find my credits completed?
You can find your total credits from your VTU marks cards or results page. Each semester has a fixed credit total based on the subjects. Add up the credits for all semesters you have completed. If you're unsure, use our CGPA calculator to check your current standing.
Can I use this to plan across multiple remaining semesters?
This calculator focuses on a single upcoming semester. For multi-semester planning, calculate the required SGPA for one semester at a time. After each semester, update your current CGPA and credits and recalculate. This iterative approach gives you a realistic roadmap to your target.
