How VTU Grades Work
CIE (Continuous Internal Evaluation)
CIE is conducted by the college and is typically out of 40 marks. It includes internal tests, assignments, lab records, and attendance. The CIE marks are added to your SEE marks to determine your total.
SEE (Semester End Examination)
SEE is the university-conducted exam and is typically out of 100 marks (or 60 marks after normalization). Your SEE marks are combined with CIE to give your final marks out of 100.
Final Marks → Grade
Your total marks (CIE + SEE, out of 100) are mapped to a letter grade using the standard VTU grading scale shown above. Each grade corresponds to specific grade points from 10 (O) down to 0 (F). These grade points are used to calculate your SGPA and CGPA.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the passing mark in VTU?
A student must score at least 40 out of 100 in each subject to pass. Marks below 40 result in an 'F' grade with 0 grade points. VTU also requires a minimum aggregate across all subjects in a semester.
Does this converter work for CIE and SEE marks separately?
This tool converts total marks (out of 100) to a grade. In VTU, your final marks are a combination of CIE (Continuous Internal Evaluation, typically 40 marks) and SEE (Semester End Examination, typically 60 marks). Add both to get the total out of 100, then use this converter.
Can I use this to calculate my SGPA?
This tool gives you the grade and grade points for individual subjects. To calculate SGPA, you need to multiply each subject's grade points by its credits, sum them up, and divide by total credits. Use our SGPA calculator for that.
