CGPA Tier Guide

Where your CGPA places you in the placement landscape.

!

Below 6.0 CGPA — Very Limited Options

Most mass recruiters require at least 6.0 (60%). Focus on clearing backlogs and improving CGPA. Off-campus opportunities and startups are your primary options.

A

6.0–6.4 CGPA — Mass IT Companies

Eligible for TCS NQT, Infosys, Wipro, Capgemini, and Cognizant. These companies hire in large numbers and offer solid entry-level packages.

B+

6.5–7.4 CGPA — Good Opportunities

All mass recruiters plus Accenture, Deloitte, and some product-based companies. Opens doors to better-paying roles and specialized positions.

A+

7.5–8.4 CGPA — Dream Companies

Eligible for Amazon, Microsoft, Samsung, and other top product companies. You can also aim for TCS Digital and similar premium roles.

O

8.5+ CGPA — Elite Tier

Eligible for Google, Goldman Sachs, Uber, and top-tier product companies. Competitive coding skills and projects become the differentiator at this level.

Important Notes

Active Backlogs = Instant Rejection

Most companies will not consider you if you have any active ( uncleared) backlogs at the time of placement. Clear all backlogs before sitting for placements.

10th & 12th Marks Also Matter

Many companies require a minimum of 60% in both 10th and 12th standards. Some companies like TCS and Infosys have strict academic cutoffs across all education levels.

Cleared Backlogs Usually Fine

Having cleared backlogs is generally accepted by most companies. The exception is Cognizant, which may reject candidates with any history of backlogs. Always check the specific company policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the percentage requirement change between 2018 and 2022 schemes?
The percentage threshold (e.g., 60%) stays the same across schemes, but the CGPA equivalent differs. Under the 2022 scheme, 60% = 6.0 CGPA. Under the 2018 scheme, 60% = 6.75 CGPA because the formula includes a 0.75 offset. This is why you see different CGPA cutoffs for the same company depending on the scheme.
What if I have a gap year or year-back during my degree?
A gap year or year-back does not automatically disqualify you, as long as you have cleared all backlogs before the placement drive and meet the CGPA requirement. However, some companies may ask about gaps during interviews. Be prepared to explain the reason for the gap honestly.
Are these cutoffs guaranteed or can they change?
These are typical cutoffs based on commonly reported eligibility criteria. Actual cutoffs can vary by college, year, and market conditions. Companies may raise or lower requirements based on the number of applicants and hiring needs. Always verify with your college placement cell for the most accurate and current information.
Can I sit for placements if my CGPA improves later?
If your CGPA crosses the eligibility threshold after re-evaluation or by improving grades in subsequent semesters, you become eligible for companies that require that CGPA. However, many placement drives check your CGPA at a specific point in time (e.g., after 6th semester). Plan your academic trajectory accordingly.
