What is CGPA in VTU?

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the overall measure of your academic performance across all semesters at Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU). While SGPA reflects your performance in a single semester, CGPA gives a cumulative picture of your entire degree program.

For VTU students, CGPA is calculated from the SGPA of each semester along with the total credits earned in that semester. This weighted average ensures that semesters with more credits have a proportionally larger impact on your final CGPA.

VTU CGPA Calculation Formula

CGPA = (SGPA₁ × C₁ + SGPA₂ × C₂ + ... + SGPAₙ × Cₙ) / (C₁ + C₂ + ... + Cₙ)

  • SGPAáµ¢ = SGPA of the i-th semester
  • Cáµ¢ = Total credits of the i-th semester
  • n = Number of semesters completed

How to Convert CGPA to Percentage in VTU

VTU follows a specific formula to convert CGPA to percentage:

Percentage = (CGPA - 0.75) × 10

For example, if your CGPA is 8.50, your percentage would be (8.50 - 0.75) × 10 = 77.5%. This conversion formula is officially used by VTU for all scheme evaluations.

Step-by-Step CGPA Calculation Example

Let's say you've completed 4 semesters with the following results:

SemesterSGPACreditsCredit Points (SGPA × Credits)
1st Semester7.5020150.00
2nd Semester8.2020164.00
3rd Semester8.8022193.60
4th Semester9.0022198.00
Total84705.60

CGPA = 705.60 / 84 = 8.40

Percentage = (8.40 - 0.75) × 10 = 76.5%

CGPA vs SGPA — What's the Difference?

Understanding the difference between CGPA and SGPA is crucial for VTU students:

  • SGPA measures your performance in a single semester only. It's calculated at the end of each semester exam.
  • CGPA measures your cumulative performance across all semesters completed so far. It updates after every semester result.
  • SGPA is used for semester-level evaluations, while CGPA is used for degree classification and placements.
