What is CGPA in VTU?

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the weighted average of your SGPA across all semesters at Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU). While SGPA measures your performance in a single semester, CGPA gives you a holistic view of your entire academic journey throughout the degree program.

Under VTU's grading system, each semester's SGPA is weighted by the total credits of that semester. This means semesters with more credits have a greater impact on your overall CGPA. The formula used is: CGPA = Σ (SGPA × Semester Credits) / Σ Semester Credits.

For example, if you scored an SGPA of 8.5 in a semester with 20 credits, your credit points for that semester would be 8.5 × 20 = 170. After summing all credit points across semesters and dividing by total credits, you get your CGPA.

How to Calculate CGPA in VTU

Step 1: Get Your SGPA for Each Semester

You need the SGPA for every semester you have completed. You can find these on your VTU marks cards or use our SGPA calculator to compute them from individual subject grades.

Step 2: Note Total Credits per Semester

Each semester has a fixed total credit value based on the number and type of subjects. This is pre-loaded in our calculator based on your selected VTU scheme. Typically, regular semesters have 20-22 credits, while project semesters may have fewer.

Step 3: Multiply SGPA by Semester Credits

For each semester, multiply its SGPA by the total credits of that semester. This gives you the credit points earned in that semester. For example, SGPA 8.0 × 20 credits = 160 credit points.

Step 4: Divide Total Credit Points by Total Credits

Sum all the credit points across all semesters and divide by the total credits across all semesters. The result is your CGPA. For instance, if total credit points are 650 and total credits are 80, your CGPA would be 650 ÷ 80 = 8.125.
